excellent book
Here Dan Hill proposes a rethink of the strategy design and designers use in effecting change at all scales. He is particularly interested in shaping policy and complex systems. Luckily, the ideas in Dark Matter serve as a nice call to designers' posture in general. I found it to be eminently readable and highly enjoyable. Get the sample, realize you are highlighting half of the passages and buy the book.
I think you've nicely defined the problem space for SD practice and how we might go about delivering public good. Public service IS too important to fail! I think a big challenge and opportunity for strategic designers within the architecture of government concerns 'revelling in complexity' and avoiding path dependency. Extremely complex systems overlaid on complicated systems, like energy or agriculture require deep technical knowledge and context gaining expertise... Rarely do we find this on teams and certainly not with one designer.

This is the most succinct and best blend of theory and practice I've come across in the design and strategy space. I was energized by Hill's lessons and advice, and was able to immediately find it useful in my work.

Dan successfully argues that strategic design is actually "a thing" - and the examples provided were relevant and worthy of independent follow up.
There are many takeaways from this book - and as other reviewers have noted - this book will leave you thinking for an extended period of time. Personally, I was able to use some of the insights from this book immediately in my day job as an IT consultant - so the book is relevant to ther fields of endeavor - not just designers.
I wanted so much to like this book. The theme is great, but the more I got into it, the more it sounded like a policy wonk was filling up words to make a required length
This was recommended to me and although I love reading and love design I get bored fast reading design theory and never get design coffee table books. This book was different - I found the language the most compelling part - so it is apt to have the subtitle a strategic design vocabulary. If you're interested in thinking and talking intelligently about strategic design and not sounding like a complete academic then just get it.
