In this classic, humorous science fiction romp, a husband and wife who were executed for selling state secrets have their sentences reversed and are now resurrected. They hire a detective agency to find their long lost daughter who disappeared somewhere in a system of four notoriously deadly planets. The Hellquad. The hero and his android butler set out to find her, aided or hindered by a female reporter, a telepathic inventor, street gangs of alien thugs, an android repairman named E. Power Gonzaga, a captain named Space Tug Annie, a band of armed pimps with yellow hats, a man in a bottle, and his zero-G wrestler sidekick. Fun, funny, and memorable.

Sounds like a good book when you read the description, but open it up and you'll find, like most of Goulart's work, that the cover art and back panel description are the best parts of this book. Goulart could have run with any of the cool ideas in this book, but seems content to have kept it trim, with one-dimensional characters who I couldn't seem to care about, maybe because the book is so short. But other shorter novels have kept my interest, every time I pick up Goulart I come away disappointed, wondering how it could have ever seen print. Most of what I've read by Goulart, in my opinion, isn't even as good as the worst of Amazing Stories in it's declining years, and, as I've said, if it wasn't for the flashy cover art I don't think Goulart could have sold many of these. Having read the book, I feel cheated, even having only paid a few cents for a used copy. Who told this guy he was good? I ask myself. Hopefully nobody still is.

Hellquad edition by Ron Goulart Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

From the cover - roughly Years ago an infamous couple had been executed for selling solar secrets to an extra-galactic enemy. Then the sentence was reversed and the victims resurrected. They had stowed away a planet's ransom from their treason and their heiress had long disappeared with the loot. So Soldiers of Fortune, Inc. went to John Wesley Sand and asked him to find the missing maiden, who was last seen in the Hellquad sector. To Sand, however, Hellquad meant, in his own words "slaves, space pirates, welfs, mewts, madmen, psychotic cyborgs, lunatics at large, brokedown andies, lycanthropes, alfies, senile servos, zombies, the dregs of every other planet in the universe." But the money was too good to pass up and so Sand took the job - and found everything he expected, plus some mind-boggling things that he didn't. Great fun.
Ron Goulart's strengths include a smooth style (which he says was partly learned during his years as an advertising copywriter) and a mordant and deadpan sense of humor. His weaknesses are plots that are routine and repetitive and a use of somewhat cardboard characters.

These strengths and weaknesses may both be seen in this space opera set in his Barnum System series of stories. A husband and wife who were executed for selling state secrets have had their sentences reversed are now resurrected. They hire a detective agency to find their long lost daughter who disappeared somewhere in a system of four notoriously deadly planets (the Hellquad of the title). The hero and his android butler set out to find her, aided or hindered by a female reporter, a telepathic inventer, street gangs of alien thugs, an android repairman named E. Power Gonzaga, a captain named Space Tug Annie, a band of armed pimps with yellow hats, a man in a bottle, and his zero-G wrestler sidekick. It is a fairly standard performance for Goulart.

But _Hellquad_ illustrates a characteristic of Goulart's writing that is not frequently discussed by critics his brevity. Nowadays, many editors (either from laziness or for financial reasons) do not demand that authors trim their novels down. There is a surplus of science fiction novels that are sprawling and badly written. This is not the case with Goulart's novels. Even his minor pieces are tightly written and easy to read. They say what they have to say in the minumum amount of words and then come to a close. _Hellquad_, a mere 158 pages, deserves a few points for this.
A five-star, fun read. Goulart is a veteran science fiction writer that keeps the action moving at a fast and humorous pace.
