"The building groaned in the wind, ached under rainfall, grew tired of neglect. Then AJ came and things began to change." -- from the Bookshop Hotel

The Bookshop Hotel is emotionally rich and just the right length to devour in an afternoon curled up with a favorite cup of coffee. I could happily spend the rest of my days living in one of those cozy rooms above the bookshop of Klemm's engaging imagination.

Twenty-six year old AJ Rys returns to her childhood hometown and begins restoring an old hotel bequeathed to her by her grandfather. Rotten boards are replaced, the woodwork is spruced up, and then the books move in. The wonderful bones of a Victorian mansion are resurrected anew into a bookshop where an old, dying community begins to hum to life once more. But AJ's past identity within the small, sometimes confining, community clashes with who she's becoming. A.J. must find the courage to come to terms with her past and forge her future in a community of people she cares about.

Klemm's language is gorgeous, flowing from one beautiful sentence to the next. The characters jump fully formed from the page, feeling instantly like people I'd known my whole life. Hoping there will be a sequel so I can spend some more time in the old hotel in Lily Hollow! It already feels a little like home.

The Bookshop Hotel by A.K. Klemm is a thin little book that could have been fleshed out more, but it was still a sweet read. If you love finding out-of-the-way bookstores with nooks and crannies and lots of character, you’ll enjoy this book. You will wish and hope that The Bookshop Hotel is a real place that you can visit.

I’m not the kind of person who needs to always be reading flashy, action-packed, page-turners. Yes, I do like those kinds of books (Dan Brown). But I also like books such as Little House on the Prairie, Anne of Green Gables, and All Creatures Great and Small. Books that make you want to bite into a crisp apple, take a trip to Tuscany, or as The Bookshelf Hotel does, settle into a character-rich old bookstore with a good book and something nice to drink. And it will bring back memories of all the great times you spent in bookstores and libraries hunting for that special find.

I should mention that the first edition of this book has numerous editorial errors, so if that bugs you, consider yourself warned. The setting, story, and characters, however, will warm your heart.

I definitely look forward to seeing more from this author. Everyone who reads The Bookshop Hotel will hope it’s a real place and want to visit!
This is a charming novella about a young woman who inherits an abandoned, but once-grand, hotel and sets about converting it into a bookstore. An interesting cast of small-town characters provides differing points of view that flesh out the hotel’s history and give us backstory about the town’s past and present inhabitants. As might be expected, the heroine is psychologically damaged, to a degree that few of the other characters realize. It turns out she’s also physically damaged, which I think is a nice touch.

One thing I particularly enjoyed was watching the heroine design the store what kinds of books she placed together, where she placed them, the decorations she chose, the addition of a coffee and pastry bar, and her inclusion of other items (like artwork) to sell as an adjunct to selling books. Clearly the author knows what she’s writing about. And I must say, she writes beautifully.

Unfortunately, for me at least, there’s almost no conflict in the story. Workmen renovate the hotel, assistants (including a homeless Goth chick) are hired to help out in the shop and are given lodging in the upstairs rooms. Yet nothing goes wrong. Everything runs perfectly smoothly. To me this is not only unrealistic, but also a set of missed opportunities for the heroine to reveal her character through overcoming adversity.

Granted, there’s a bit of conflict between the heroine and her mother. But little is made of it. We also sense that one of the assistants is falling in love with her. But the heroine seems oblivious.

There’s a neat surprise near the end of the story. And to the author’s credit, it’s left unresolved. As a writer, myself, I would have given one more hint, but I suspect it would have been different from what the author had in mind.

In any case, I recommend this story to all who love bookstores, and especially to those who’ve wondered what goes on behind the scenes. The Bookshop Hotel is definitely a keeper.
I loved this book - read it in one sitting and wished for a sequel so that I could read it the next night! I fell in love with the characters and with the Bookshop.
I was so sad to reach the end of this novella. I want to know what happens after the party!! A. K. Klemm wrote so descriptively I couldn't help but picture each scene as though watching a movie. Loved the story and all the characters.
I loved A. K. Klemm's style of writing. She has a style all her own. Klemm captured my interest from the beginning to end. You can tell Klemm is well-read when she mentions numerous famous authors in her book. The characters in the book were so real in my mind. I didn't want the book to end but sadly it did and I cried. I hope she writes another book soon.
I love reading a story set in a small town with a quirky determined character you feel you know. The Bookshop Hotel made me yearn for that hotel in my own town. I craved coffee, quiet time to read in a comfy chair while sitting in a room scented with hazelnut/cinnamon candles.
I had to deduct one star not for any flaw in the story itself but for editing not the fault of the author. Publishers should be more diligent before releasing to the public.
This book was so amazing. I love every word and felt that the characters leapt off the page and into my live, I want to visit this hotel and read A.K. Klemm's next book there. I felt like I got to meet all of her characters and was a part of the beautiful little town. Best read I have had in a long while!!
